Where did it all begin for you?
Music has always been a part of my family, like everyone in my family can sing so it’s been around. I only decided to take music seriously last year in 2019, mainly because my friends and family could see potential in me and were getting on to me by saying “Nikki you can’t waste this voice”. It was only then I decided to stop being a baby and do it. I’m grateful for the push because within the last two years I’ve grown so much and it’s now what I want to do.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Tiwa Savage has been my number one, always and forever. I grew up listening to her and she’s got this attitude about her. She’s sassy, African, Nigerian and her attitude was in her music, which is very inspiring to me. I really love Simi because I love to sing my lyrics and it’s different to me compared to other artists. I recently took a liking to Tems and Eni especially because her music is very motivational and it empowers me. Tems, her sound is different – she reminds me of ‘Koffee’.
Would you say you are an Afrobeats or R&B artist?
For me, it’s always been Afrobeats because when I write my lyrics, I always try to put my native tongue in the music – I throw in bits of my language in it, hence giving my music the ‘Afrobeats’ feel. I think when I started my music career it was more of an R&B vibe, but as my journey has gone on, I’m getting onto the Afrobeats vibe more and more.
Let’s talk about your debut EP, why did you decide to have your name as the title of your EP?It’s about me. It’s literally about my past life and experiences, it’s my story.
I’ve heard your EP is based around your past regrets, which mainly include men. Do you think your music will bring forth the right man for you?
If it’s meant to be, it will be. Maybe, it could, but I’ve never thought about it that way.
What’s your favourite track on the EP?
Sweet Love for me would be my best one. It describes how I was feeling in a past relationship and then I decided to put it in a song.
What three words best describe Adenike?
Caring, loyal, and motivated
What 5 things can you not live without?
God, friends & family, my phone, food, and music.
What advice would you give yourself five years from now?
Put your all into what you want to do. Whatever you want to pursue, put in the work and also remain positive.
