ORIGINAL VS SAMPLE : JLO VS MACEO AND THE MACKS

Written by on 26/03/2021

Our Original vs Sample segments highlights popular songs that were sampled by other artists and on this episode, it is Maceo and the Mack’s ‘Soul Power 74’ (1974) vs Jlo’s ‘Get right’ (2005). On the Original, at the 2.00 mark you can hear exactly where she has taken the sample for her hit song. ‘Soul Power’ was originally a song by James Brown, recorded with his band ‘J. Bs’. James brown then went on to make different parts which included an instrumental adaptation of ‘Soul Power’ by having Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley overdub additional horn parts onto the tempo track of the original recording.

Jennifer Lopez’s (J.Lo) ‘Get Right’ was written by record producer Rich Harrison, Singer, Usher Raymond and James brown (Credited) and was a part of her Rebirth album, not only was the song the lead single of her album, but the music video was also nominated for 4 VMAs (Video Music Award).

It goes without saying that both songs reigned in their respected eras.
