It’s easy to forget that Pop Smoke’s ‘Meet The Woo’, M Huncho’s ‘Huncholini the 1st’ & Lil Baby’s double platinum ‘My Turn’ were albums that were dropped at the beginning of this year! It’s been a long year with the COVID pandemic kicking things out of whack. 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year and music has often been an outlet for many of us. With these lows, there have been many musical highlights that have put a smile on faces. Here’s Tha Culture Club’s, 2020 Wrapped Up Challenge highlights.
Toosie Slide was released by Drake on April 3rd which was around the time of the pandemic. Drake reached out to popular dancers Toosie, Hiii Key, Ayo & Teo to help create a dance for an unfinished song and that’s how ‘Toosie Slide’ came about. With the dance video (see below) being released a few hours before the official global release of the song, the dance challenge was born
Although Lottery was released in 2019, the dance challenge took off in 2020 with Jalaiah Harmon creating this dance routine. What makes this a standout for 2020 is that she finally got credit for being the originator of ‘Renegade’ challenge after a few influencers stole it and claimed it as their own without giving credit to Jalaiah.
In a similar way to the Lottery, Don’t Rush feat Headie One was released in 2019 but it’s popularity went global after the #DontRushChallenge was birthed. It was created by Toluwalase Asolo who attended The University Hull. Since then, it has taken off globally.
AmaPiano has made monumental headway in the U.K. during 2020 with big features from Wizkid & Burnaboy and artist/producers such as Kabza De Small & Mfr Souls have pushed the sound to be mainstream. Now when you talk about AmaPaino, you can’t talk about Jerusalema and the popularity of this only increased when the Angolan dance group ‘Fenómenos do Semba’ created this simple yet infectious dance routine
The release of WAP caused a conversation in some circles about whether females could talk about their ‘WAP’ in music the same way men have done for years!! Although it shouldn’t be a conversation as music is a form of expression to be expressed in whatever way (within reason) that an artist sees fit. Either way, the visuals in this music video are incredible and it didn’t take long for a dance challenge to be created from this catchy song
Megan Thee Stallion has had a good year of music and off the back off WAP she’s back with Body, a new single off her debut album ‘Good News’. The #BodyOdyChallenge has 261.4 million views on TikTok
